Our clinical paper on brown fat and its association with obesity is recently published in “Nuclear Medicine Communications” journal. We collaborated with Dr. Medhat Osmand and Dr. Aileen Green of St. Louis University. Earlier we have published the technical piece of this work in IEEE TMI where we explained how we determine subcutaneous and visceral fat and identify brown fat automatically with high accuracy and efficiency.
In the current effort, we examined central obesity and brown fat using PET/CT images. I and my Ph.D. student (Sarfaraz Hussein) have participated in this study. We found that active BAT detected by 18F-FDG PET/CT is associated with less central obesity and liver fat. The presence of foci of BAT may be protective against features of the metabolic syndrome.
